Choosing Between Different Log Splitters
Category lawnmowersFor a person who anticipates splitting logs on a regular basis, whether for firewood or for making furniture, a log splitter can be a great investment. It will save time and energy over using an axe or splitting wood with a mallet and wedge. With all the choices on the market, though, it can be hard to make a decision when it comes to which log splitter to purchase.
One of the primary concerns should be how and where the equipment will be used. If a person plans to use a log splitter at home or taking it with them for occasional use elsewhere, an electric splitter may be all that is needed. The average electric splitter costs less than £300, but will only exert about two to five tons of force. For the average home user this should be enough. However, if a person plans to use the splitter more often, especially for commercial use or split hundreds of logs, it is a better idea to invest in a gas-powered hydraulic model. These models often run on 5.5 horsepower and can exert a force of about 20 tons, so they can split a lot more wood without wearing out than a model designed for home can. In addition, while an electric splitter can be easier to transport, if there is no electrical outlet nearby, a gas-powered model is more practical to use.
Some log splitters are vertical, while others are horizontal. A horizontal splitter is more convenient for home use, especially if a person is working alone. However, a vertical splitter works for those who cannot control the terrain where they may be using the equipment. Vertical splitters are a better option if the location where a person is working does not have an even surface to place a splitter on.
A person should also consider the amount of maintenance needed to keep a splitter running. You have to keep a log splitter lubricated in order to keep it in safe operating condition, so a self-lubricating model not only saves time over other models, but can also be safer to run.
