How To Do Lawn Reseeding
Category lawnmowersIt’s not that difficult to do lawn reseeding. You can reseed your lawn at any time of year, but it’s best to do it in the fall. Late August or early September are ideal times for most of the country to do a lawn reseeding. The are several reasons to reseed your lawn. Reseeding allows you to grow grass on bare spots or to thicken up the growth on thin spots. It also allows you to rejuvenate the lawn you already have.
Before you start to reseed thin or bare spots you need to thoroughly rake the lawn with a broom rake. Make sure to use a heavy duty one with looped spring braces that are between the spacer bar and handle bar. If you have a lot of thatch on your lawn you can use a multi-purpose rake that is also called a double-duty rake. One side will remove the thatch while the other will prepare the soil. Once you’ve done this, you’ll easily be able to see any thin or bare spots on the lawn. Loosen the soil to a depth of about 1” or more with a soil-loosening tool and sprinkle with the proper type and amount of fertilizer. Make sure you use fertilizer that is made for lawns. Once you’ve applied the fertilizer, rake the area level.
If the ground where there is a bare spot has been compacted because of heavy traffic, make sure to loosen the soil down to about six inches. Pulverize the soil, add a little peat moss or gypsum, then reseed. The peat moss or gypsum will help the soil stay loose. For seed, you should choose a mixture that works for the area you are seeding. Some work better in sunny areas while others love shade. Use your hands for lawn reseeding. Drop the seeds sparingly; only about six seeds will live in every square inch of lawn. You’ll waste time and money spreading the seeds too thick.
Once sown, spray with a light mist of water and then cover with clear sheets of polyethylene plastic. This will get the seeds off to a faster start as it will keep moisture in the ground avoid constant sprinkling. Use rocks, dirt, or stakes to keep the edges down and when the first seedlings appear, take off the sheets or they will kill the seedlings. Spray a light mist two or three times a day until the grass is 1” high then water once a week until the grass reaches 3” high.
