Lawn Mower Repairs

Before you take your lawn mower off to its necessary dealership to have a diagnostic and once-over for needed lawn mower repairs, consider this: What if you could find out what’s wrong by yourself first? It may seem daunting and tedious, but the truth is diagnosing simple problems with your lawn mower may be the easiest way to have the repairs done and saves you money and possibly being taken advantage of. It may even be so simple to fix that you can do it yourself for much less than you would pay a professional to do the same job.

If you pull the cord or turn the key of your lawn mower and nothing happens, or very little happens and the mower won’t start, one of several things could be wrong. Before jumping the gun and rushing your mower to a local mechanic to have the motor replaced or some other expensive part replaced, consider simpler lawn mower repairs you can perform yourself. For example, checking your oil and air filters to make sure they aren’t clogged up may solve the problem. Try cleaning or replacing your spark plugs, and always double check to make sure your gas tank has enough gas to get the motor started.

If your mower is having trouble cutting your grass as cleanly and effectively as it once did, flip it over and take a look at the blades. Over time, especially with hard use, blades will become dull and cut less effectively. Try using a blade sharpener to sharpen your blades yourself, or have a professional sharpen them. A last resort would be to buy whole new blades – just make sure you try yourself first. What’s the harm?

One of the most irritating and completely debilitating malfunctions of push mowers is when the pull cord snaps off. It can cost upward of $300 to have a pull cord replaced at a mechanic shop. Instead, try this first. Follow your cord to the spool it rests on. Remove the old cord and replace it with comparable cord (found at many hardware and lawn & garden stores). Run it back up through the catches and reattach the handle. If you have too much trouble with this however, it’s perfectly acceptable to find professional help for your lawn mower repairs.
