Bosch AHS 48-16 Electric Hedgecutter

This hedge cutter is not battery operated like several of their other products, but rather uses a power chord. It was designed to make short work of cutting small-to-medium sized hedges – especially those that are young and small-leaved.

Bosch designs all of their power and garden tools to be not only easy to use, but to be eco-friendly. The Bosch AHS 48-16 Electric Hedgecutter is no different. This hedge cutter weighs only 3kg, or around 6 lbs 10 oz, and is advertised as being extremely comfortable to use. It comes with a 12m power cable, which should be more than long enough for most needs. Read More

Honda Izy HRG415PD 16-inch Wheeled Push Petrol Lawn Mower

The Honda Izy HRG415PD Lawn Mower has a cutting width of 16″ (41cm) and is perfect for anyone needing a lawnmower designed to handle small to medium sized gardens.  This mower is our favourite petrol push type mower simply because it is so reliable and gets the job done. The “Izy” (pronounced “Easy”) as it is called, is light weight and can bend and swerve around any lawn decorations or tight corners.    Read on to find out why we think this is one of the best mowers you can buy for the price in its class.

Design

The Izy is perfect for lawns about half the size of a normal tennis court. The Izy is a joy to use and has many great design features that make it stand out from its competitors.  The blade design has been upgraded for more efficient grass cutting and reducing noise by 30% when compared to earlier models, something the neighbours will appreciate.  Another excellent feature of the Izy is the auto choke system. This means that you do not have to set the choke yourself or prime it with fuel. The auto choke system works by detecting the engine temperature. A thermo wax assembly then closes the choke valve when cold and opens it when hot. This is what truly makes the Izy efficient. You won’t have to bother with the question of, “How much choke should I use?” when getting ready to work on your lawn.  The Izy HRG415PD may not have  as many features as some other mowers, but the features that it does have are brilliant.  We like the simplicity of the Honda for being no frills and sticking to what it knows best.

What is it like to use?

The Izy HRG415PD is a lot of fun to use, especially for those with gardens that are hard to keep trim due to lawn ornaments, etc. The auto choke features saves tons of hassle while the large wheels make it a breeze to maneuver, even on slopes.

The Izy is also lightweight due to its efficient design, so you’ll be whizzing around the garden in no time. You’ll find that the mower cuts evenly, leaving few brown or bald patches, and picks up the cut grass consistently.  The cutting height can be easily adjusted on two levers on located on the front and back wheels and can be set from 20mm-74mm.

While the grass collection bag might may not be as big as some other mowers, the mower is designed for a medium sized domestic lawn.  The bag will be sufficient for anything up to 200 m2 of grass.  One added advantage of having a smaller sized bag is that it keeps the weight of the mower down.

The engine in the HRG415PD is the same 4.5hp 4-stroke engine Honda uses in the larger HRG465SD mower, so it really packs a punch.  You won’t usually find this size of engine in a mower of this class.  As a result the mower is very competent in long and rough grass.  It also has no problem with wet grass either.

When you use this mower you will feel the quality of the machine.  Precision Honda engineering and assembly makes this something special to use.  We were also very impressed with the overall finish of cut the mower gives.  Very consistent and smooth finish.

Verdict

With so many different mowers on the market, it’s difficult to figure out which motor truly fits your needs.  If you are looking for something that is reliable with a sub £300 price tag then look no further than the Honda Izy HRG415PD.  With Honda’s signature stamp of approval on this mower you are almost guaranteed a mower that will last a very long time.  This won’t be the cheapest mower in its class but you will be hard pressed to find something that has the same level of quality as the Honda.  Voted our best petrol push mower of 2012, highly recommended.
